What is an Enrolled Agent (EA)?
Taken directly from the IRS website:
"An enrolled agent is a person who has earned the privilege of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service by either passing a three-part comprehensive IRS test covering individual and business tax returns, or through experience as a former IRS employee. Enrolled agent status is the highest credential the IRS awards. Individuals who obtain this elite status must adhere to ethical standards and complete 72 hours of continuing education courses every three years."
That means they have to study tax laws and codes like crazy and then take the test spread out over three parts. They walk into the testing room and are given the test, two pencils, and three sheets of scratch paper. It is strictly monitored and timed. They must pass it with at least an 80% score and not all who take it pass.
Once they are an enrolled agent, they have to take 72 hours of credits in ethics, tax situations, and other continuing education credits over a three-year period with a minimum of 16 hours per year.
